Probiotics are essentially living bacteria or other microorganisms that can improve your health when you ingest them. Your body will begin to repair itself and become better able to handle stress. Your digestion, skin, mental health, heart health, and more, will all improve.

What Foods Are Good Sources Of Probiotics?

1. Yogurt

This has to be one of the best sources for getting your healthy bacteria. Its easy to add to your diet, and makes a great daytime snack. Milk is fermented by healthy bacteria.

It can be eaten by people who are lactose intolerant because the bacteria convert it into lactic acid. Make sure you choose yogurt with live cultures though.

2. Sauerkraut

Shredded and fermented cabbage, is a traditional side dish used all over the world. Get the unpasteurized version, otherwise all the good bacteria will be killed. It also contains lots of essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

3. Miso Soup

It contains fermented soybeans, and combines with rice or barley, and salt. It also contains lots of protein and fiber. Plus, this soup tastes great on a cold day!

4. Tempeh

This also contains fermented soybeans, and comes formed as a pancake like patty. Its slightly nutty and earthy. It contains good bacteria for the gut, and helps remove the bad. It’s a good high protein replacement for meat.

5. Kimchi

This is a nice Korean side dish made from fermented veggies such as cabbage and radishes. Its seasoned with several spices and is high in essential vitamins and minerals such as vitamin K, and iron.

6. Kombucha

This drink is widely popular in the health food circles, and upscale grocery stores lately. It is a fermented tea that tastes slightly sweet and sour. The good source of probiotics comes from friendly bacteria and yeast living inside.

7. Sourdough Bread

You’d think bread were the devil from reading everything about it lately. A lot of the negative publicity is warranted for other types of processed breads, but not sourdough. It uses a slow rising yeast to form, and contains a healthy bacterium called lactobacillus. Lactobacillus is a great source of probiotics.

8. Kefir

Similar to yogurt but you usually drink it instead. Kefir contains live cultures, with up to 30+ different strains of good bacteria. It has a slightly sourer flavor due to the yeast inside. Kefir is actually a better source of probiotics than yogurt too.

9. Pickles

These are actually cucumbers that have been sitting in a solution of water and salt. You’ll want to opt for the kind that are fermented in saltwater brine, as vinegar brine actually kills the good probiotics. Just keep in mind that they are high in sodium if eaten in excess.
