If you’ve ever had a problem controlling how much, and what kind of foods you’re eating, then perhaps you should look into how to control your impulses.

If you’re like most people, you probably have eaten something fairly recently, and can’t remember the last time you went a few hours without eating. In fact, Mindful eating helps you take back control of what you put in your mouth, feel healthier, and stop weight gain.

What is mindless eating? A good example is when we are eating food while doing something else such as watching tv, looking at our phones, or anything else that distracts us.

If you’re not paying attention, its very easy to keep eating without realizing we are actually full. It takes the brain awhile to realize that the stomach is full. And if you’re not paying attention, you won’t read the signal until its way too late.

In order to practice mindful eating, we need to focus on being aware of what we are doing in the current moment. We also need to be aware of the healthfulness of the food we are eating. This doesn’t mean you have to eat broccoli 3 times a day.

You can eat pizza, but still be aware of what you’re doing to your body. Pay attention to the food you are eating, and you’re more likely to make better decisions:

1. Make A Shopping List

The less time you wander the isles without a plan, the better chance you will choose the right foods for you. Come prepared with a solid list of what you need, and get out. Mindful eating starts with a plan.

2. Slow Down And Pay Attention To Your Food

Make sure to chew your food slowly, and thoroughly. This will help ease the digestive process, and allow your brain time to determine if you’re full or not.

3. Eat In Moderation

Try plating your food on a smaller plate instead of a full-size dinner plate. It will make your meal appear larger.

Take smaller bites, and pause between. Don’t wait to eat until you’re super hungry either. This promotes binge eating behaviors.

4. Learn To Tell The Difference

Ask yourself if you’re really eating because you’re hungry, or you are craving the pleasure eating food brings. The difference is critical for developing mindful eating habits.

5. Appreciate The Way Your Food Looks, Smells and Tastes

Learn to appreciate the way it hits your senses, and think about all the different things that went into making your dish.

6. Pay Attention To How Food Makes You Feel

Notice what your body does after you finish eating. Do you feel tired? Sluggish? More energy?

These are all signs that can help you figure out what you’re doing right or wrong.

7. Plan to Eat With Your Health In Mind

Decide how your ideal meal plan looks, and start planning from there. You don’t have to go crazy healthy, but do try to keep it balanced.
