How Can I Change My Mindset To Be More Positive?

You may be thinking to yourself that this sounds all well and good, but you are the way you are. There is always a choice in everything we do, and you can choose to be positive.

It may have become an ingrained habit to be negative; and because its been a habit, being negative may be easier at the moment.

The truth is, you and only you possess the power to change your mind. Negative self-talk, thinking about the worst thing that can happen, thinking like a victim; these are all choices.

If you understand that a change is needed, you can follow these steps to start in the right direction:

1. Start With ‘Why?’

You’ve got to hone in on your reasoning for doing the things you do. If you lose sight of what you’re fighting for, its too easy to get lost on the way, and stall out or turn around.

A simple written statement that you can reference on a regular basis will help you refocus your mind on the goal, so you can muster the needed strength when things start to get hard; and they will get hard.

Read it before you go to sleep, or when you wake up the following day. The key is to keep your eye on the prize.

2. Emphasize Your Strengths

You should start by figuring out what you’re good at, and focus on the good you’re accomplishing. If you are focusing on your weaknesses, and why you aren’t good enough, eventually it will create a cycle of negativity which can erode the way you think.

Instead give yourself constructive feedback on what you need to improve, and positive reinforcement on the things you’re doing well.

3. Use Your Words

Its easy to just let what we say blurt out. We speak without really thinking about the power our words have. Negative words can really hamper our ability to be positive.

Take a few seconds before you speak and analyze how often you are being negative in your mind. It often translates into the spoken word, and has ripple effects on those around us.

4. Create Your Ideal Environment

If you are surrounded by negativity, it will seep into your very being. You have to be careful about what and who you allow to enter your world. The saying ‘you are the sum of the people closest to you’ is actually real.

Therefore, vet your circle of friends, and the different sources of information you consume. Also you want to be around people who radiate a positive mindset, and good energy.

Read books that promote building a better life, and taking responsibility. Ditch the things that promote doom and gloom.

5. Stay In The Present Moment

If you spend too much time thinking about the past, you will fill your mind with regret. Conversely, Spend too much time in the future, and you will bring anxiety.

When you catch yourself in either of these mindsets, it helps to break free by grounding yourself in the now.

Therefore, a good way to do this is to try to be present in your body, and feel yourself moving or interacting with the world:

  • Deep breathing
  • Weightlifting
  • Running
  • Go outside into nature
  • Meditation

6. Visualize Yourself Being Positive & Successful

If you can’t picture it happening, because you don’t believe it, you will never be able to make it work. Imagine yourself being the kind of person you want to be. See your life, how your days play out, and who you spend time with.

How do you feel? What kind of action are you taking? Where do you live? Keep asking questions, and give yourself the pictures in your mind as the answers. Do this on a daily basis, and make sure to keep refining.

The key is to keep that vision in the forefront of your mind. Positive mindset here we come.

7. Keep A Journal

Everyday you will encounter different obstacles, and successes. Some major, some minor. You can keep track of your progress by journaling along the way. This gives you a timeline of just how far you’ve come along the way.

Seeing your progress looking back will keep you motivated to stay on track. Confidence will build up over time as you realize that you are moving in the right direction.

Also, writing has a positive correlation to the thoughts that we put down on paper; since it reinforces the process of becoming mindful of the way we think and feel. Soon you will start to notice patterns, which can help you steer your mindset in the right direction.
