You know you should do it, but you haven’t so far. The thing is, not working out on a regular basis could be holding you back from living a better quality of life, and having the kind of health that keeps you out of the hospital.
Shortly after starting, you’ll start to notice the difference in the way you look, and feel. The hard part comes in the consistency, and discipline required to make this more than just a short fad. It has to become a lifestyle habit.
If you’re thinking about getting your self in shape, but aren’t sure where to start, this is a good place to learn. There is no one size fits all program that will be perfect for you, its all about what works best for your individual needs; and there is only one way to find out, by doing it.
It could be heavy, light, or in-between intensity. Different times of the day may work better for one person or the other.
Some may be better off doing some sort of sport such as boxing, while others may enjoy cardio or weightlifting. So where do you start?
1. Talk To Your Doctor Before Working Out
Make sure you can handle the stress you’re going to put on your body. This is especially important if you’re older than 40, and if you’re not used to exercising.
2. Get a Solid Pair of Workout Shoes And Workout Gear
You want to make sure you start off on the right foot so to speak. Therefore it means talking to someone at a fitness or shoe store that knows what kind of fit will suit your needs.
Make sure they are good for different kinds of activity, not just one thing.
3. Find A Quality Gym If Needed
Do your research and take a look at a few different gyms in your area to get a feel for what kind of atmosphere they are promoting, and what kind of equipment they have.
You’re going to be spending your time here, so you want to be at a place that you will enjoy. This step isn’t entirely necessary if you plan to workout at home, or just run around the block occasionally.
4. Decide What You Want
Setting goals is part of the process of sticking with an exercise routine. If you have something in mind that you can work towards, it makes the small steps towards that goal manageable. Perhaps you want to be able to run 5 miles eventually.
You’ll start small, and work your way towards that goal with shorter distances. Smaller goals will increase your chance of success because you won’t get overwhelmed and quit too early.
Take it one step at a time, and try to improve incrementally each day that you exercise.
5. Build Your Habit Muscle
The key to getting in shape is consistency. You have to show up. That means the days you don’t want to exercise, just put your shoes on and drive to the gym. Eventually it gets easier.
One way to make this easier is to make your workout happen at the same time every day, such as going immediately before or after work. Lock yourself into that routine, and it will become… well, routine!
6. If You Fall, Get Back Up!
Life happens, and plans get messed up. It’s not something that can be totally avoided.
Do your best to get back up again and get into the routine, rather than using it as an excuse to quit entirely. Remind yourself why you started in the first place, and keep going.
It doesn’t matter if you are back to square one, movement forward is all that counts. If you can start to couple the feeling of pleasure, and wellbeing with exercise, you’ll be more likely to stick it out.
7. Pick Something You Like Doing
If you can’t stand the workout you’re doing, chances are, you won’t be doing it very long. So you’ve tried running and think its boring?
Then give yoga, weightlifting, kickboxing or any other number of things a try. It’s about finding something that brings you some kind of enjoyment, and you can see yourself sticking to.
8. Get a Personal Trainer If Possible
This has to be one of the best investments for your physical health that you can make. Since your trainer teach will teach you the correct form for your exercises, and he/she will help hold you accountable to your goals. This is a cheat code to success in your workout journey.
How Much Should You Be Working Out?
You don’t have to become a bodybuilder, or a professional athlete to enjoy good physical health. In fact, current recommendations for the level of physical activity is set to approximately 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week (1).
Break it down into small chunks throughout the week, or lengthier workouts less often. It’s up to you! Just make sure you don’t overdo it, especially in the beginning.
And make sure to give your body a break every now and then. Overtraining can result in illness, and cause serious physical injuries.
