When our thoughts are controlled by the tide of our emotions, we lose control. If we think of our mental health like a muscle, it stands to reason that if we exercise this muscle, it will get stronger.

If we neglect this muscle, it will become weak, and fail us in our time of need. The first step is recognizing that we have a need. A need to improve our capacity for excellent mental health. It’s part of a holistic approach to life. There is no silver bullet.

Depending on how far down this road you are willing to go, seeking a therapist could be a great choice. This is someone who is trained to understand what it is you are going through.

They have the most experience dealing with this kind of thing, and can draw from said experience to help you out with your specific problems.

People going through extreme stress, mental health problems, or crisis would be wise to seek help.

2. Exercise The Demons

Your body will provide you with stress relieving chemicals during and after a workout. This will help you deal with negative patterns of stress with more resiliency.

When you are in movement, you tend to forget about your problems, and instead are present in the feeling of your own body. Your mood will gradually improve, giving you some needed relief.

3. Practice Gratitude For Mental Health

When we are starting to have problems with our mental health, it may be that our world view is skewed to the negative. People tend to forget about the things that make their lives good, and focus on the problems.

7. Get Better Sleep

Sleep seems to be part of just about every health recommendation. And for good reason. Without it our mind is drained, and we don’t think clearly.

Make sure you don’t ingest caffeine several hours before bed, and try to ensure you snooze at the same time every night, we operate best in a routine.

8. Socialize or Stay In?

Depending on our personality, we may be more suited to one or the other to help us get out of our heads, and into our comfort zone again. The key is to figure out what activity works best with your style.

Introverts may enjoy reading or surfing the web, compared to extroverts who might want to go out on the town to meet up with some friends. Either way, pursue an activity you enjoy.
